Celestron Car Battery Adapter for All Nexstar Telescopes Review

I bought this cable to replace the one that came with our CPC 925, which we use with a 20AH field battery. The original power cord failed after two years, developing an intermittent connection where the wire enters the plug housing at the telescope end. This was especially annoying because I always loop the cable thru the fork arm handle to provide extra strain-relief, so the original cable was never yanked or stressed at the point where it failed.

This new cable is made a bit differently, so I won't know if it's better or worse until it's been through a couple of temperature extremes. One difference is the type of cable used. The new one uses something similar to zip cord or speaker wire, while the original had both conductors enclosed in a round outer jacket that was softer and more flexible. The new DC plug is a straight type, rather than the right-angle plug on the original, which I liked. However, the new plug seems beefier and appears to have a much better strain-relief, so we'll see how well it holds up. The cigarette lighter plug is identical on both cables, except the new one lacks the original's red LED power indicator. Unlike the molded plug on the other end, this one can be easily removed & replaced, so I might swap them. I'll plan on updating this review after the new cable completes its first winter of use.

Celestron 21041 60mm PowerSeeker Telescope Specifications

Celestron's value priced Powerseeker 60 telescope takes a basic "just the facts" approach to affordable entry level telescopes. The package includes an adjustable aluminum tripod with an alt-azimuth mount and stabilizer, a Kellner type K20 eyepiece, a Ramsden type SR4 eyepiece, a 3x barlow lens, and a 5 power cross-hair finder scope.

The Powerseeker 60 comes disassembled in a compact box, but it won't take long to put everything together. Go ahead and try it out in the daytime, that's the best time to align the finder scope while looking at a distant tree or telephone pole.

My first view of Saturn's rings and star cluster M13 in Hercules came with a 60mm telescope, and I enjoy celestial viewing with the Powerseeker 60 to this day. The secret is to use the low power K20 eyepiece and only extend the tripod legs half-way. This gives me sharp and steady views, whether I'm looking at nearby hills, craters on the Moon, the Double Cluster in Perseus, or even the Andromeda Galaxy!

With a 1.25" focuser and diagonal mirror, it's easy to add better eyepieces. The Kellner type K20 eyepiece yields a 1.1 degree true field of view, better than the Huygens or H-type eyepieces still found in many beginner scopes. Adding an optional Celestron 25mm E-Lux eyepiece is better still. With nearly 2 degrees true field of view, the 25mm E-lux makes it much easier to find objects, either on land or in deep space. The SR4 eyepiece is less impressive; it's like peeking through a pin-hole. Adding the 3x barlow to the SR4 to get that 525x proclaimed on the box is peeking through a dim, fuzzy pin-hole.

I'm surprised that a telescope this inexpensive can be this good. It's good enough to show me Saturn's rings at night or a Steller's Jay at 100 yards during the day. In my opinion, the Powerseeker 60 would be an even better bargain if it came with a K10 eyepiece in place of the 3x barlow and the SR4 eyepiece. Also take a look at Celestron's Firstscope 60AZ; it's only a little more expensive, but it includes two useable eyepieces, a red-dot finder, and planetarium software for your computer. –Jeff Phillips

It fits over the telescope's eyepiece (even large eyepieces such as those in Celestron's Ultima line), and connects to the visual back of the telescope. Optional counterweights will be necessary to properly balance the telescope when using the Tele-Extender.To use the Deluxe Tele-Extender, remove the diagonal from your telescope and insert an eyepiece directly into the visual back. I use this to mount my Canon 40D to Nextar 8SE. It is simple to use, however, threading in the dark can be tough. I suggest putting this on first and then mount your camera.

You must remember that the focal length changes with the removal of the eyepiece, therefore, you photo will not be as magnified. You will be able to photograph the moon with much clarity and the major craters and plains are visible.

I give this a 4 simply because of the threading issue.

this eypiece is an excellent choice for someone who wants a high power eyepiece that's inexpensive. The images are surprisingly clear and is definetally worth the money. My only complaint is with most inexpensive high-power eypieces is the small eye relief. I would recommend an eyepiece that has larger eye relief like a lanthanum eyepiece to anyone who can compfortably afford the higher price.

I bought this 17AH battery to power my Celestron CPC1100 telescope. It works well powering the telescope. However, I would recommend an additional power source if you have a dew heater. The dew heater drains the battery in a few hours. When the battery gets low, the telescope movements became eratic (wouldn't stop on the desired object).

I would rate the battery higher if the charging cord were better. My charging cord died with one or two recharges. I ended up buying a smart battery charger (battery minder plus) which I plug in through one of the front cigarette lighter ports (not through the charging port). I briefly used a radioshack charging cord. However, I didn't have much confidence that it charged the battery to the right voltage without over-charging and damaging the battery.

I haven't really used the radio but the headlight is extremely bright and useful when tearing down your telescope for the night. It is a relatively convenient size for carrying and doesn't seem overly heavy to me.

This speaker makes a fine companion to the SkyScout, especially if more than one user wants to hear the audio narration. USB battery charging is handy and it's very compact with a neck strap if you want to use it that way. By twisting the silver front end it expands like an accordion to noticeably improve bass response, but that's not really necessary for audio spoken word.

My only gripe is that it's a very tight fit if you choose to plug it directly into the SkyScout (which I do, because it's compact with no dangling cords) - it'll pretty much fit only one way and even then it's squished a bit and somewhat awkward, but doesn't interfere with SkyScout operation at all. I think this is an aftermarket product that Celestron found and adopted after the SkyScout was designed, because small changes to the SS molded housing would make it fit perfectly.

This speaker and its cords will fit into the SkyScout carrying case; again a bit squished because the case isn't designed for it and is tight to begin with, but it works and it's great to keep everything together.

It works, though, and is recommended especially for the price. Note: the list price on Amazon's page is WAY off the mark; I think actual list price is only about -40.

The SkyScout is a very cool product and this little speaker makes it better.

Overall this was a good purchase. My son is a new star gazer and this is just what we needed. It was easy to put together. It took a little while to find something in the sky. As for delivery, it was here the next day--that blew my socks off!!

One thing i could say about this mount is that its very solid. Made from cast iron. Two sets screws came with the unit, one shorter for the smaller scopes and the longer for the larger scopes. The installation is a snap since all i had to do was to remove two screws that goes around the outside by the rear of the tube and attach the mount with the supplied screws. A word of caution is to make sure you're using the right length screws. One problem i had was that when I tightened the thumbscrew onto my Canon Digital Rebel, the camera body was still on the loose side on the mount. I put down a layer of rubber sheet on the surface of the mount so that the camera was tight and snug onto the mount. Oh by the way.. the rubber sheet also protects the buttom of the camera since the mount surface is pretty coarse. Overall its a good compact mount with the right price that gives me the tracking ability of the scope for my camera to get wide angle sky shots.

I bought this telescope primarily for visual use. I almost decided to get a smaller aperture. However, after seeing the telescope size and comments on it's handling, I decided it would be light enough for me to setup alone. The telescope tube and fork are pretty heavy. However, the ergonomics are very good such that lifting the tube isn't too bad (carried close to your body).

I was seriously tempted by the Meade LX200R 10" and 12" scopes. In the end I decided the ergonomics on the Celestron were better and it was quite a bit cheaper (Celestron 11" was cheaper than Meade 10"). The fork mount is perfect for visual use since it can be setup very quickly. I suspect the Meades would be better for serious imaging if mounted on an equatorial mount. I was concerned about getting a telescope shipped to my home, but in the end it wasn't damaged in transport.

I love the goto features of the scope. Using the handheld controller you can quickly find objects in the sky. I find the built in database quite good for visual objects. I quickly started using the Constellation view mode (view objects in a constellation) to reduce the amount of slewing across the sky.

I find the auto-sky-align feature to work pretty well. This alignment mode is great since you don't need to know star names; just pick 3 bright stars. However, it is prone to occasionally fail alignment and 3 stars take more time than 2 stars. To eliminate the alignment failure and decrease the alignment time (2 stars only), I now primarily use auto-2-star align despite the fact you need to know the star names.

The 10x50 finder scope is not terribly good but does the job.

My focus knob is not as smooth in turning as some telescopes in the store. I notice this more as the scope is near the horizon. There is quite a bit of mirror shift when focusing but this is a Schmidt-Cassegrain characteristic. It took me some practice to obtain fine focus. I plan to order a feathertouch focuser to get finer control over the focus.

My telescope was shipped with the GPS turned off. To turn it on you must go deep into the menus. I also discovered that you must set your scope to the proper daylight savings time setting or some stars will be out of range.

The cord wrap feature sometimes annoys me. This feature tries to prevent wrapping the power cord. However, I usually watch for this problem anyhow and the cordwrap feature sometimes forces longer than necessary telescope slews. Cord wrap gets turned on automatically after every alignment.

The tripod seems pretty heavy duty and comes with a nice heavy eyepiece tray. My tripod did not come with a leveling bubble. Placing the telescope fork on the tripod is pretty easy. Once you manage to grab the center guide pin with the fork, you simply need to rotate the base until the scope falls into the retention screw cutouts. Sometimes finding the center guide pin can take about 30 seconds but you get better with time.

Optically the scope seems pretty good so far. You can see the Cassini division of Saturn and banding on Saturn and Jupiter. It took me a while to figure out collimation. I ordered a set of Bob's knobs and played with the collimation for a while to get the hang of it. I have tried to perform a star test and didn't get a perfect diffraction pattern on either side of focus. I believe there is possibly a slight downturned edge in the mirror from looking at the diffraction patterns. However, so far objects in the telescope look great and I am not an optical expert anyway.

I have used the Neximage web cam for Lunar and planet images. The images turn out great. I have also tried some limited piggyback photography. All of my viewing and imaging so far has been from my backyard in a suburban light polluted area. I am able to see quite a few galaxies and nebula from my backyard.

Celestron technical support is a bit slow in responding to inquiries through their web site.

Overall, this is a great scope for visual use.

After visiting two local stores to apply "hands on" to different binoculars, and after returning one pair, I took the better part of a day researching binoculars. My sister gave me the specs for her 0+ pair so I used that as a base. Her binoculars carry another brand name but were made by Celestron. Bottom line, I got them home, took them from the box and could see the birds in my yard with a minimum of adjustment. I have always had great difficulty in using binoculars and have always been frustrated when trying to buy a pair. I am extremely happy with these and the price is wonderful. The specs compare to much higher priced binoculars. I learned that my attempts to buy a light weight pair of binoculars was a mistake. The "42" in the 8 x 42 makes a big difference for field of view. Anyway, I am very satisified with my purchase!

I have written a long review on the Steiner 7x50 Commander V Binoculars. Much of what I wrote in that review applies to these binocs, as they are still 7x50's...... so if you are trying to decide if 7x50 is right for you, then read that review on amazon. If you want general information on selecting the right binoculars, my Canon 10x42L binocular review is more detailed and explains many of the technical issues of binoculars in general.

All visual optics are a function of their optical design, build quality, and mostly their visual experience.....then, you compare all this to the selling price. Clearly, these binocs are simply spectacular for their modest price. I could nit pick a few items, but the price / quality is so exceptional, it would be unfair to Celestron. They packed a lot of quality in these binocs for an amazingly low price, thanks to a good optical design, well executed build quality, good QA and an amazing warranty.

Are there better 7x50's? Sure..... but they are often much more expensive, 0 + and the differences in quality will not justify the price differentials to the avg person... as very small gains in image quality / features, often will increase the selling price 2x - 5x.

BTW, these binocs demonstrate to me, just how good Chinese optical manufacturing is becoming through the years. 15 years ago, these binocs could have NEVER come out of china with this much quality. Of course, some of the credit must go to Celestron for the design and the QA.

Of course, my comments are directed to the non compass version of these binocs also.

I had an ordinary optical "200x" microscope and saw a few shaky, interesting things in a drop of water on a glass slide, I but had no good way to take a photo. Holding a digital camera up to the eyepiece was problematic at best. I'd heard of USB microscopes that connected to a PC, such as the QX3. Checking the reviews on Amazon quickly dissuaded me from that. Then I found the Celestron 44340. It had a built-in 2MP digital camera. Images were saved to internal memory and transferred to the PC via USB cable, or to a SD card. I was also concerned about getting good images. In books like Guide to Microlife (ISBN 0-531-11266-7), there were excellent photos in darkfield illumination, as well as the usual brightfield. The Celestron 44340 did both, although darkfield only worked at the 4x and 10x objectives. I got a set of glass slides, glass cover slips, some depression slides, eyedroppers, and containers. After the summer rains, there were many places to collect samples, as well as from shorelines of rivers and lakes. I was able to successfully image in brightfield and darkfield rotifers, amoebas, flatworms, copepods, ostracods, shrimp hatchlings, vorticella, bursaria, diatoms and algae, and a variety of fast-moving ciliates. In addition to digital photos of up to 2 megapixels in size, I also recorded movies of a few seconds to a few minutes, sometimes switching between 4x magnification to 10x or 40x to get more details, and even switching between brightfield and darkfield. If I found something interesting, I could use software to extract a still image. The only CON I can think of is that when the microscope is turned off then back on, the internal date and time resets to 1/9/2031 8:00 PM, so any photos or movies taken all have that date, unless you manually set it every time.

I bought this when I bought the telescope to help with the dew and stray light for a CPC1100. In Austin Texas, the dew has been a problem and I have also needed a dew heater.

The fact the lens shade folds up is nice for storage. Sometimes the shade is a little tricky to attach.

I ended up buying a custom aluminum dew shield since it is a little more convenient to install and the aluminum shield has a cap useful for preventing dew when you want to leave the scope out (setup at night and observe in the morning).

I got this solar filter for my powerseeker 127. For all telescope owners, I really do recommend this as daytime astronomy is about as fun as nighttime astronomy. With this, you can observe sunspots and enjoy solar eclipses without going blind. Although the filmsy look of this filter might cause you to think this tears easily, I have to tell you that it is not true and is in fact very durable. It does not break like glass does and is much lighter. After trying this on my telescope, I can tell you that the images are wonderful and have extremely good contrast. For the price, it is definitely worth it.

I love this tripod. I ordered it for use as a digiscope tripod because of the control I'd have with the fine-adjustments that are difficult to make free-hand or even with a fluid panhead mount. This tripod solved that problem. Excellent adjustments. I also love the sliding mount since my spotting scope is a lot of weight hanging out a long distance from the camera mount. It is also not a light piece of equipment, but most of that is because it is very well built and sturdy as a rock. When your trying to get a picture of a tiny critter from half a mile away, you don't need some flimsy tripod jiggling and vibrating at the slightest hint of a breeze or hand touch. Considering there are other tripods at twice or triple the price that do the same thing, this is a top notch purchase. Worth every penny. I've already recommended it to a few friends who have telescopes and digiscope setups..

I have so many good things to say about these binoculars. First of all, they come with a lifetime no fault warranty. This means if you break them, or if they break themselves, ever, you can get them replaced for free! Even if it your fault! This is amazing!

Second, the optical quality of these Bak 4 roof prism binoculars is unparalleled for anything less than double the price. The ergonomics are nearly perfect- not too heavy, excellent balance, and the eye pieces have extenders that block glare and reduce eye fatigue. These are as good as the Nikon Monarchs for 1/4th the price. The have fully coated optics for better low light resolution, and they have a long eye relief which make them less fatiguing to use.

Overall, these may very well be the best binoculars on the planet for less than 0, and I can say this because I have been researching binoculars for the last 6 months, and I have a BS in Mechanical Engineering so I know what goes into making a good binocular. Sure the 00 Swarovski's are better, but not by much!

Celestron Noble 10x50 Compact Waterproof Binoculars with carrying case Review

I bought these mainly on recommendation from my astronomy professor that I should buy 10x50's for astronomy and for general use like bird watching. I shopped around a lot and tried several other brands including Nikon and some department store brands. Overall I think that these binos had much crisper focus than the others I have tried. My first impression out of the box was that they felt solid and well built. The optic coatings look consistent and they are multi-coated and phase coated even though they aren't advertised on Amazon as phase coated. The size is just right and water proof is a major plus for me.

My first test was during the day, I checked the focus on near objects and found that I could focus on things as close as 10 feet away which is really great for bird watching. I did notice some chromatic aberrations around tree branches against a cloudy sky, but it wasn't too bad. The focus on everything was sharp as a tack! I am very impressed with how sharp they are.

Since I bought these for an astronomy course the true test was at night. I live in a fairly dark area but there are a few cities around. The first object I looked at was the Orion nebula, it was very clear and I could make out at least three stars in the center and could see quite a bit of the nebula. Next I looked at Pleiades, normally I can see only 6 faint stars but through the celestrons I could see hundreds and the 7 sister stars were bright and crisp.

Overall I am very happy with these binoculars. The only reason they got a 4 out of 5 was because the case and main lens covers are quite cheap and don't work well. The second reason is it would be nice if the binoculars had a tripod mount for astronomy. It's tough to hold even 10x50's steady and a tripod would be a great help.

I can't compare this filter to its counterparts from Lumicon, Orion, Thousand Oaks, or others, since I don't own and haven't tried any of them. Physically, the Celestron looks identical those offered by Baader Planetarium--I've never seen any other make with those square serrations along the perimeter.

We still haven't been out to our dark site with the O-III yet, but I did give it a quick try a few weeks ago at our local community college, where we usually just do planetary viewing due to the excessive light pollution. I inserted the O-III in our filter slide and pointed it toward M57, not expecting very much. After all, the Ring is supposedly better suited to a UHC filter than the O-III. The results were absolutely stunning--the nebula appeared as a distinct greenish ring against an inky black background. I then changed to a longer FL EP and directed our CPC 925 to slew over to M27. Usually we can't see the Dumbbell from the college and that night was no exception. Not knowing whether it was even in the FOV, I slid in the O-III filter and the nebula just popped right out, nearly dead center, and with as clear definition as we usually get from the dark site (Bortle's green) with no filter at all.

We will definitely be picking up the UHC and h-beta filters to join this one. At more than twice the price, I can't imagine how the Lumicon O-III could be twice as good as this one, so I'm very satisfied with the Celestron filter, both in performance and value.

The description for this product does not mention that using this T adapater will not allow the camera to focus on many Newtonian reflectors because the adapter basically extends the focuser and will not allow it to travel in far enough to achieve focus with the camera.

There are a few fixes for this. First, check the focuser on the scope to see if the eyepiece holder will unscrew and allow you to screw the camera's adapter directly to it. If not, you can purchase a 2x barlow (Celestron item # 93640) that includes a T-adaptor on it or a zoom lens with threads for a filter that will also allow you to directly attach your camera adapter such as Celestron's 8mm - 24mm item # 93230. Obviously, including a lens in the equation magnifies the image which you may or may not want.

The most expensive and intrusive is to replace the focuser with an aftermarket focuser that will allow this to work.

Other than the fact that it was not directly compatible with my scope, the quality of the T adapter was very good which is typical for Celestron products.
